19th Century Victorian Silver centerpiece bowl, shaped as a large boat resting on a shaped stand, the body is chased with floral swags, figural cast scroll feet, the raised tail surmounted by a cast nude cherub holding a garland. Hallmarked English silver (925), London, year 1897 (b), Maker's mark for Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century large and impressive Victorian Solid Silver centerpiece bowl, shaped as a large boat resting on a shaped stand, the body is chased with floral swags, figural cast scroll feet, the raised tail surmounted by a cast nude cherub holding a garland.

One side is engraved with initials, the other with a crest and the motto "Absque Labore Nihil", for the town of Stalybridge (near Manchester). The base also bears a memorial inscription: "Presented to J. R. Norman Esq. Mayor of Stalybridge on the occasion of the birth of a son during his Mayoralty 1897".

Both base and bowl are Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1897 (b), Maker's mark for Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd, important dinasty of silversmiths active for over two centuries.

CONDITION

In Great Condition - No damage, just general wear.
