DESCRIPTION

Antique late-19th Century Indian Kutch (Cutch), Bhuj, (Gujarat region) hand-crafted solid silver tray, of shaped rectangular form, finely chased throughout with scrolling leaves and floral patterns on a finely tooled matted ground. The center decorated with violent hunting scenes, two scenes depicting a large male lion killing a hunter and two scenes depicting an elephant killing a tiger, centered by a large peacock. This tray is particularly fine quality. but unfortunately unmarked. Judging by the style and the smallest attention to details, I would strongly attribute this tray to Oomersi Mawji, the most renowned Indian Colonial silversmith, court Silversmith to the ruler of Kutch, Maharao Shri Mirza Raja Sawai Khengarji Bahadurno, the longest ruling Maharajadhiraj of the Princely State of Kutch, from 1875 to 1942. The Oomersi Mawji pieces are now very sought after by collectors, especially ones of extremely high quality and unusual design, such as this tray.
