DESCRIPTION

A teak two-tier drinks or tea trolley made from reclaimed timber by Hughes Bolckow Ship Breaking Company Limited, the teak taken from the timber of RMS Arlanza.

RMS Arlanza was a 14,622 GRT ocean liner of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. She was built in Ireland in 1912 for RMSP's scheduled route between England and South America. She was a Royal Navy armed merchant cruiser from 1915 until 1920. She returned to civilian liner service in 1920 and was scrapped in England in 1938.

It was not uncommon for ship-breaking companies to create choice pieces for sale made from reclaimed parts of the ships. Hughes Bolckow (formerly Messrs, Hughes, Bolckow, and Co., Limited) was a well-known ship breaking company based out of Blyth, Northumberland. The company was responsible for scrapping a number of famous Royal Navy ships including HMS Britannia (previously HMS Prince of Wales). In response to requests from customers, the company created a series of "choice Antiques" from the fine old seasoned timber they possessed from broken up ships. The company even had a Ship Timber Department that would create articles manufactured from teakwood taken from obsolete battleships and preserved in "Solignum."

Please note that our interior pieces are located at our Interior Design Showroom in Buckinghamshire, if you wish to see the item in person, please contact us to arrange an appointment.

CONDITION

In Great Condition - wear and tear as expected, possibly some later alterations. Our opinion is that the tea trolley was foldable but later modifications means this is no longer the case. Some staining to the wood. Structurally sound.
