DESCRIPTION

Antique early-20th Century Indian Colonial solid silver regimental wine ewer, the top band is beautifully chased and repousse' decorated depicting Hindu gods and goddesses in elaborate cartooches, and the bottom applied with a intertwining snake climbing up the jug, the unusually shaped handle applied with foliage, and lid mounted with a snake finial. Indian silver depicting deities and religious processions are inspired by the bas-reliefs on the famous temples in southern India and is called "Swami", this style is typically from the region of Madras.

'Presented to 'James Scott Dill M.D 4th M.N.I on the occasion of his marriage by his brother officers...10th January 1882'.
