The interior bearing Pseudo-marks (tested shows 18 carat gold) and Maker's mark for Sochay & Colin, important goldsmith active in Hanau, Germany, in the early 19th century. The box dates before 1831.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century extremely rare German 18 carat solid gold and enamel snuff box, rectangular form, the hinged cover with blue enamelled panel depicting two cherubs among scrolling foliage, the sides and the underside also decorated with blue enamel with stylized bands.

The interior bearing an important memorial inscription relating to the commander of the "11th Light Dragoon": "I. S. Chapman Esq.re Ass. Surgeon 11th Light Dragoon from his sincere Friend and Commanding Officer Lt Colonel N. Brutton, Jan 2nd 1831".

Colonel Nicholas Brutton has been Commanding Officer from 1830 until 1837, and was considered the kindest and most popular commanding officer the regiment has ever had (please follow this link for more information).
