19th Century German Hanau Silver impressively large lidded tankard, in the style of the early 16th Century example, beautifully chased and embossed with a very detailed and crowded battle scene, the base decorated with scrolling foliage in relief, large figural handle terminating with a scrolling leaf junction, hinged domed cover in the same style applied with a scrolling feather shaped thumb-piece and large figure of a soldier with a spear as a finial. Hallmarked with German Hanau pseudo-marks used by J.D.Schleissner & Sohne.

Antique 19th Century exceptional German Hanau Solid Silver impressively large lidded tankard, in the style of the early 16th Century example, beautifully chased and embossed with a very detailed and crowded battle scene, the base decorated with scrolling foliage in relief, large figural handle terminating with a scrolling leaf junction, hinged domed cover in the same style applied with a scrolling feather shaped thumb-piece and large figure of a soldier with a spear as a finial.
The base is hallmarked with German Hanau pseudo-marks used by J.D.Schleissner & Sohne, also Austrian import marks (800 standard). Maker J.D.Schleissner & Sohne, founded by Johann Daniel Schleissner (1793-1862), Johann's son, Daniel Philipp August Schleissner (1825-1891), was a great admirer of the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo period. Daniel had studied many private collections as well as public collections and had acquired much knowledge of the design aesthetics of these periods, hence producing very well made pieces and establishing himself as Hanau's pre-eminent producer of antique style pieces. This tankard dates to year 1870's. This is an extraordinary presentation piece, stunning quality and impressive size.
