DESCRIPTION

A rare and impressive dining table by Jacques Duval-Brasseur, made in France around the 1970s. The thick oval glass is supported by a sculptural frame entirely made of brass, encompassing a smoked quartz crystal to the centre. Signed to the foot.

Jacques Duval-Brasseur was a French sculptor born in 1934 in Tours where he lived until 1939. He spent his childhood in Algiers during the war before returning to France in Corentin. At the age of 17, he leaves his family and heads to Cherbourg "with 600 bullets in his pocket" and went to register at the Beaux-Arts in the city. The courses that he will follow while doing various jobs to get by, will confirm an artistic vocation that he has felt since childhood. However, he will have to wait ten years before decorative department of a company entrusts to him and paves the way to being an artist. He takes the opportunity to start creating objects, sculpting using all the materials he can recover from breakers or scrap dealers. He made his first abstract sculptures in sheet metal of cars, insects with tanks of mopeds, and also creates his fantastic “beasts” from scrap metal. He perfects the techniques instinctively, seeking to tame the materials and engages with them in a struggle to make the most of them.

In 1969, thanks to Jean Dive who noticed and appreciated his creations, he is presented for the first time at the Maison et Jardin Gallery. He exhibits four large abstract sculptures and it was the beginning of his success. The Shah of Iran acquires one of the most beautiful sculptures and the actor David Niven, also seduced, buys one along with other famous collectors will follow.

Throughout his career he continues to sculpt incorporating semi precious materials from the natural world such as quartz and agate, his reputation ever increasing year by year and today he is one of the most sought after sculptors of the late 20th century, his striking designs making a huge statement in any interior.
