DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century Continental solid silver kantharos cup and liner, exceptionally heavy and decorative, cast with a Bacchanalia in high-relief, twin leaf-capped handles, removable gilt liner.
The cup is a fine replica of the ancient Roman silver vases (Kantaroi) discovered in Pompei in 1835 and now in the "Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli".
Both parts are fully Hallmarked (eagle, crown and letter "M"), marks unknown to me (the silver has been acid tested and shows a 800+ standard), the origin is Continental and probably Southren Italian. The piece probably dates to the mid / late 19th century.
