ANTIQUE 19thC BRITISH OAK CASED CHESS SET, PROBABLY BY JACQUES c.1890
Antique late 19th Century Victorian oak cased chess set. If the award winning Netflix series 'The Queens Gambit' did not tempt you into the world of chess, then perhaps opening this litle beauty on holiday with a few Negroni's just might! Although unmarked, like most examples, the overwhelming quality and style of this set align with the renowned firm of Jacques of London. Founded in 1795 and made famous for inventing the game of croquet, they also produced the finest quality chess sets and board games of the 19th century. The outer case is formed of polished English oak and from its plain box like exterior opens dramatically via dual hinge to reveal a two-tone parquetery playing board. The finely carved bone playing pieces, stained in typical white and red, slot nicely in to place and allow the game top be stopped, packed up, and resumed at any time. A wonderful survivor in good original condition. A superb gift and a must have item during the festive holidays, that will make a real conversation piece and a superb piece of history reminiscent of a begone era.
