Antique early-20th Century Chinese export solid silver presentation wine goblet, impressive and exceptionally fine quality, richly gilt inside, decorated with repoussé prunus and perched birds against a hand chased matted ground, cup resting on an elegant stem, base decorated in similar design. The shield engraved 'Taiping Recreation Club - Billiard Handicap, July 1904, Won By P. Clesster'. The Taiping Clubs were sports and recreation clubs that existed in the city of Taiping, Malaysia, during the late 19th century. At the time, the city saw significant growth in European as well as Chinese, Indian, Arab, and Indonesian communities, and thus the need for such clubs arose. The cup is unmarked (acid tested shows a 900+ standard).
