DESCRIPTION

Antique late-19th Century Burmese (Myanmar) exceptional quality solid silver repousse and pierced bowl, decorated with eight highly detailed round plaques in high relief depicting various religious Buddhist scenes, the base chased with a band of large betel leaves and the body and top with pierced scrolling foliage. The workmanship is simply outstanding, particularly crisp and detailed. Burmese silver bowls were based on the form of the ‘thabeik‘ bowl or a begging bowl, used for collecting food for and by the local monks, with time they evolved and became more ornamental and were used by the Burmese aristocracy and European clients as ornamental and decorative objects.

Underneath engraved 'Presented to, Mrs M M Rose, by the Master of the Rangoon College, on the Occasion of her Marriage, December 1895'.

The workmanship is particularly crisp, detailed and the work is simply outstanding. The bowl is unmarked as is often the case for Burmese silver, acid tested shows a high 900+ standard silver purity, judging by the quality and style the bowl dates to the early 1890's and is undoubtedly made by a master silversmith.
