MID 20thC SOLID SILVER & ROYAL DOULTON 'BLACKJACK' MUG, ASPREY & CO c.1941

£495.00

If there is a finer way to enjoy a pint of cool ale I would love to see it. This wonderful 'blackjack' or 'jack' is based on Medieval and Tudor examples found in alehouses and disinguished homes accross the land. Originally hey were made from wax coated leather and were highly durable and east to transport. They were also highly popular with pub landlords who found them to be relatively sturdy when tossed around during the inevitable bar fights. This particular example was made during WW2 in 1941 and rather than leather is ceramic, made by the famous Royal Doulton factory. The effect of the leather is realistically created whilst the mounts and applied cartouche are hallmarked for the eminent firm of Asprey & Co. A wonderful rare and useful object that also provides and interesting talking point over a few drinks! Hallmarked English Silver (925 standard), London, year 1941 (F), Maker Asprey & Co.
