Antique early 20th Century Edwardian coromandel wood smoker's box with solid silver mounts. This quite stunning box is made from the highly prized calamander or coromandel wood, native to india and Sri Lanka. Already rare due to its extinction, it is renowned for its tiger like stripes and strong colours that run through the grain of the wood. this particular example was made by the esteemed silversmiths and retailers Mappin & Webb, who remain in business today after over 150 years in Piccadily supplying both royalty and nobility wih luxury silver and jewels. The corners and central handle of the box are finished in solid silver, whilst a sweet little brass reytailers plaque is applied to the edge of the base.
Each of the two hinged compartmnents can be used for either small cigars, cigarettes or jewels and accerssories depending on preference.hts (matches), impressed reg no.22563 to base. Hallmarked English silver, London, year 1907 (m), Maker M&W (Mappin & Webb). A superb gift and a must have item during the festive holidays, that will make a real conversation piece and a superb piece of history reminiscent of the bygone era.
CONDITION
In Great Condition - Very good condition for age and object of this type. The cover has a few fine surface cracks in the wood and light scuffs to the edges. Both covers close cleanly.
