Antique early 19th Century Georgian solid silver wine funnel and strainer. It has a swan-necked body with an applied reeded border, a pull out hand-pierced strainer with an applied reeded border. Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1805 (K), Maker PBABWB (Peter‚ Ann & William Bateman).
Peter, Ann, and William Bateman were part of a prominent family of London silversmiths active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Peter, son of the well-known Hester Bateman, took over the family business with his sister-in-law Ann. They continued to produce high-quality silverware, and after Peter’s death, Ann and her son William carried on the Bateman name. William introduced new styles, giving the family’s work a fresh edge. Known for their craftsmanship, they produced items such as wine funnels, sugar tongs, teapots, and trays.
