19th Century unique Victorian Solid Silver "Cellini" pattern jug on stand centerpiece, the pattern is so called in honor of Benvenuto Cellini, the sculptor and goldsmith of the 16th Century considered the greatest of all time. Antique 19th Century unique Victorian Solid Silver "Cellini" pattern jug on stand centerpiece, the pattern is so called in honor of Benvenuto Cellini, the sculptor and goldsmith of the 16th Century considered the greatest of all time.
The jug is extremely unusual and possibly unique, double-lipped neck, cast scrolling handles terminating with dragon's heads. The body is chased with the typical decoration of masks, animals, strap-work and flutes, the matched stand of circular form, decorated with an elaborate Renaissance-style bas-relief featuring four medallions with allegories of the four elements (Fire, Water, Air and Earth), surrounded by Classical-style grotesques, applied border, it rests on four feet.
The jug is Hallmarked English silver (925 Standard), London, year 1870 (p), Maker's mark S.S (Stephen Smith, great silversmith famous for his particularly decorative and desirable patterns), the base bearing the retailer's mark "EDWARD GLASGOW". The stand is Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, consecutive year 1871 (q), Maker's mark CFH (Charles Frederick Hancock, royal silversmith, previously a partner of Paul Storr and Mortimer.
He opened a shop in Bond Street, and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and other International exhibitions). The base was obviously commissioned by the owner of the jug to match it, making a unique and impressive centerpiece.
