Zwilling J. A. Henckels AG

(Active since 1731)

Zwilling J. A. Henckels AG is a German kitchenware manufacturer, one of the largest and oldest kitchenware brands in the world. Founded in 1731 by Peter Henckels, the company also owns one of the world’s oldest trademarks, that has almost unchanged since it was registered, and that happened as early as in 1731 as well.

The company was founded by the German knife-maker and was originally called Zwilling (German for “twin”), and this explains the icon on the manufacturer’s trademark: the image has slightly changed through the years, but the two twins have always been depicted on the logo. Later, as the founder’s son took over the business, the company was renamed after him and became Zwilling J. A. Henckels AG. The company specialised in manufacturing finest cutlery, knives, scissors and cooking utensils of highest quality. Already in 1818, the prosperous manufacturer opened its first trading outlet in Berlin, and by 1884 shops in New York and Vienna had been opened. In 1909, the first subsidiary was set up in the U.S. Now the brand has its affiliates in Canada, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, France, China, Great Britain and Brazil.

Over its almost three-hundred-year history, Zwilling J. A. Henckels has won countless prizes and awards. For instance, in 1851, the prominent manufacturer won an international knifesmithing medal at the World Fair in London and four years later was honoured with the highest award at the World Fair in Paris.  The Grand Prix prize was also awarded to Zwilling in 1900 and 1904. Moreover, Zwilling J. A. Henckels received a royal warrant of appointment and supplied knives to the Imperial and Royal Court of Austria-Hungary.

Nowadays the company runs several brands and not only specialises in fine kitchenware, but also partners with a professional German hairdressing equipment manufacturer Jaguar and several Japanese, Belgian and French cutlery and cookware brands.

Famous for the highest quality, laconic design and functionality, pieces by Zwilling J. A. Henckels have always been in high demand. Loyal customers appreciate the manufacturer for its attention to detail, use of quality and durable materials and subtle approach to each piece. Knives and cocktail shakers, especially those dating back to the 19th and 20th century are considered extremely rare and precious and are sought after by collectors all over the world.
