19th Century rare Victorian Silver "Armada" pattern ewer, with scroll handle, the hinged lid has an ornate finial and opens squeezing the handle trigger, baluster body, domed circular foot, the body is profusely decorated in relief with embossed flowers, foliage and scrolls on a matted ground. The body also features two cartouches flanked by cast winged mermaid and mermen, and a cast leopard's head at belly front. Hallmarked English silver (925), London, year 1888 (N), Maker's mark RMEH for Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century rare Victorian Solid Silver "Armada" pattern ewer, with scroll handle, the hinged lid has an ornate finial and opens squeezing the handle trigger, baluster body, domed circular foot, the body is profusely decorated in relief with embossed flowers, foliage and scrolls on a matted ground. The body also features two cartouches flanked by cast winged mermaid and mermen, and a cast leopard's head at belly front.

One side bears the original memorial inscription, particularly interesting as is Australian Colonial related: "Presented to Joseph R. Girdler Esq. by a few of his Australian Friends & Fellow Colonists on the Eve of his Departure for Europe, Melbourne 24th July 1890".

Each part (body, trigger, cover) are fully Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), London, year 1888 (N), Maker's mark RMEH (Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall).
