Bao Cheng

(1890 - 1949)

Bao Cheng was based in Beijing, where the tradition of enamel and cloisonné silver was very popular. Among the artists working in Beijing Bao Cheng stood out for his exceptional skills both in silver making and enamelwork.

He produced mainly silver boxes and bowls, with unusually colorful enamel decorations, generally reproducing traditional Chinese motifs generally with a symbolic meaning.

His works are quite rare and are particularly sought after by educated Chinese collectors.

According to expert Adrien Von Ferscht (see A. Von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940, 4th edition 2015) the Beijing based silversmith has no connections with Bao Cheng silver Store operating in Shanghai between 1920 and 1933.
